SEMAC NEwS MAY - Jun 2025

VIDEO - 6 Y.O. Damian Flying at SEMAC

Summary of the SEMAC General Meeting on 3 June at dingley community centre

Attendees: 22 members present. Apologies: Nick C & Brendon P

Key Highlights:

  • Instructor Course: David W, Joe S, and Petro successfully completed the VMAA instructor course on May 18, increasing the number of registered VMAA instructors to five (or six if Ben Fraser rejoins).

  • Safety Improvements: The installation of chevrons appears to be reducing overflights of the southern boundary. The next project is to close the gap above the west container wall and roof.

  • Weekend Flying Hours: The overwhelming majority of members voted to adhere to the existing flying start times: 7 AM on weekdays and 9 AM on weekends and public holidays.

  • Membership Fees: Committee recommended that 2025/26 membership fees remain at their current rates, despite an initial intention to increase them by $10. This decision was made possible due to a reduction in MAAA insurance fees. Members voted to accept this recommendation, proposed by Eddie H and seconded by Gary C.

  • Online Renewal: Geoff M developed an easy-to-use online renewal process for existing MAAA-registered SEMAC members, significantly reducing administrative work. A paper system will remain available for new members and those who prefer it.

  • Weather Station Grant Unsuccessful: The application for a weather station grant was unsuccessful. After discussion, members voted against proceeding with a weather station using club funds.

  • Caulfield Club Members: Members from the impending closure of the Caulfield club are welcome to apply for SEMAC membership through the standard application process.

  • Flightline Relocation: Discussion took place regarding moving the flightline back approximately 4-5 meters, as strongly recommended by VMAA CFI Les Marriner for safety reasons. The overall feeling was to proceed with this relocation.

  • AGM Scheduled: The Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held at the next meeting on August 5th at 7:30 PM in Meeting Room 6 at the Dingley Community Centre.

  • CASA Height Permit: Geoff M has completed the necessary paperwork to renew the club's CASA 1000' height permit, which expires in March 2026.

  • New Hand Wash Sink: Peter Z was thanked for his excellent work in installing a hand wash sink on the eastern side of the "cookhouse" container.

Financial Report:

Treasurer Rod Clipstone reported significant financial news:

  • Loan Repayment: A major outgoing for May was a $5,000 loan repayment to the VMAA, which fully clears the club's loan.

  • Income for May June: $0.00 Expenditure: $5000. Rod emphasised the need for spending restraint.

  • Membership: Current membership stands at 43 members and 4 associates.

The meeting concluded at 9:30 PM, followed by pizza and soft drinks.
